The Names of God Series

There are ninety-nine names in the Islamic tradition — the Asmaul Husna, the Beautiful Names of God. Each one a window into a different facet of the divine nature. Painting each one, Sibghatullah Siddiqui says, is an act of pilgrimage without leaving the studio.

In Islamic theology, the divine names are not merely descriptive labels. They are understood as attributes — real qualities that the divine possesses and expresses. Al-Rahman, the Infinitely Compassionate. Al-Rahim, the Especially Merciful. Al-Khaliq, the Creator. To contemplate the name is to contemplate the reality it describes.

The Names of God series began as a personal practice — a way of sustaining connection to each attribute through the act of giving it form. Every name demanded its own colour, its own weight, its own posture on the canvas.

Some names Siddiqui could not begin for days — not because he did not know how to write them, but because he was not spiritually ready to be in the presence of what they contain.

The series culminated in the 2021 Asmaul Husna exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Islamabad — the first time the complete series was exhibited together, creating an immersive environment that drew record attendance over fifteen days.

What emerged over years of this practice was not simply a collection of paintings but a kind of visual theology — a record of what it feels like to sit with each name long enough to understand it from the inside.

The series has now grown to over twenty works. Each one is complete in itself. Together, they form something closer to a prayer than a portfolio.
